THE SHORT VERSION

  • CBS aired a two-part Ghosts Halloween special on Thursday in which Hetty's estranged sister Margaret, played by Maria Thayer, arrives trapped inside a mirror.
  • Deadline reports the sisters reconcile and Hetty sends the mirror to Paris with Trevor's daughter Abby; Collider reports Margaret first tricks Hetty into taking her place in the glass.
  • Pete reappears on the anniversary of his death with no memory, and the two reports disagree on whether the two-parter is the Season 6 premiere or comes before a spring launch.

A Halloween special built around a broken mirror

CBS aired its two-part Ghosts Halloween special on Thursday, and in both accounts the mirror drives the story. Deadline reports that Jay, played by Utkarsh Ambudkar, replaced a broken mirror inside the mansion with a similar old-looking one from a flea market, hoping his wife Sam would not notice. Collider gives the accident a cause: Kyle, played by Ben Feldman, broke the original during a basketball game indoors, and Jay hunted for a replacement with Mark's help.

The reports place Sam differently. Deadline says Rose McIver's Sam is away on a book tour, and that Kyle, who also sees the ghosts, can alert Jay to the problem. Collider says Sam is in Australia adapting her screenplay, Polar Opposites, and that Kyle has stepped in to help Jay with the ghostly residents. Collider titles the two-parter Halloween 6: The Mirror; Deadline gives no episode title.

Margaret arrives with a mustache and a rule about mirrors

Margaret is played by Maria Thayer, and Deadline calls her Hetty's mustachioed, estranged sister, introduced here after a single passing mention in Season 1. Wisocky says she had wanted the part written since then: “I've been begging to meet my mustachioed sister Margaret.” The mustache is gone when Margaret appears. Deadline explains that her spirit has been trapped in the mirror since her death and exists as a reflection of herself, because a spirit that glimpses itself in a mirror as it leaves its body is trapped there.

The mirror ties the sisters to the house. Deadline reports that it belonged to the Woodstone family and stood in Margaret's room while she died of disease, and that Hetty distracted herself from the loss with lines of cocaine on that same furniture. Collider says Margaret has been inside the glass since she caught sight of her own reflection shortly after her death, nearly a century ago. “She was escaping. She was escaping pain, escaping the truth,” Wisocky says of Hetty.

The version of her own life Hetty had been telling

Deadline sets out the story Hetty had been telling herself. She blamed Margaret, in life and afterwards, for stealing her one true love, a painter named Julian, and clung to the idea that the tragic turn in her life was being refused that marriage, with her sister as the villain. What she discovers is that Margaret had expressed interest in Julian first, and that Hetty could not be bothered to listen.

Wisocky treats that discovery as a way into the character. “When she realizes that this fundamental pivot point in her life, she was not seeing clearly, I think that opens her up to being, I think, a little more malleable to her interpretation of love,” she says. She also praises the period detail that both sisters grew up in a world where marriage was the only hope of happiness, forcing them into competition rather than alliance. Collider reaches a similar reading: the mirror shows Hetty that Margaret never meant to betray her, and that much of the estrangement was her own failure to listen.

A trick, a shattering and a reconciliation

Collider's account of the reunion is harsher. It says the meeting is anything but pleasant and that Margaret tricks Hetty into taking her place in the mirror. Later, Jay and Mark accidentally shatter the mirror holding Hetty, which the review treats as a rude reminder of what losing a character would feel like. It compares the device to earlier Isaac and Flower episodes, notes that Flower's disappearance ran seven episodes in Season 3, and credits the writers with resolving Hetty's situation by the end of the second episode.

Deadline describes the outcome without the trick: the sisters make amends, and Hetty helps Margaret see Paris at last by sending the mirror to live with Trevor's daughter Abby. Collider adds that Abby is played by Gideon Adlon, that Thayer is known for 30 Rock and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and that the reconciliation is abruptly undercut by Flower's entrance, a stop sign against sappiness that still lets the reunion feel earned. Both reports find the sisters' history believable a century on.

Pete returns, and the season has a new mystery

Pete's absence hangs over both episodes. Collider says they pick up months after his disappearance on a trip to London with Jay and Kyle, hunting a portrait of the cholera ghost Nancy, played by Betsy Sodoro. Alberta, played by Danielle Pinnock, revives him with a séance even after Sass reports that Pete requested a DNS, or do not séance, policy. Deadline describes the ending: Pete reappears on Woodstone property on the anniversary of his death and remembers nothing, as if he had just died.

Wisocky tells Deadline the premise frightened the writers. “It was terrifying for us to start the episode in a post-Pete world,” she says, because when Flower disappeared the cast could assume she had been sucked up, while a ghost who simply vanishes has no precedent. She promises the 100th episode, more of Elias and Nancy, and what she calls a particularly beautiful and moving storyline for Sheila Carrasco's Flower.

When the next episode arrives, and what the reports leave open

Both reports put the next episode on Dec. 10 at 9 p.m. Deadline says the two-part Christmas special airs on CBS at 9 p.m. ET/PT; Collider says the one-hour holiday episode returns at 9 p.m. EST on CBS and streams the next day on Paramount+. Deadline adds that the show goes on hiatus until then. On the season the reports part company: Deadline writes that Season 6 premieres in the spring, while Collider reviews the two-parter as the Season 6 premiere. Neither explains the difference.

Collider is the only one of the two that judges the result. It calls Ghosts a comfort show that is no longer quite the laugh-out-loud comedy it was, argues the jokes and cast still work, and singles out Wisocky and Brandon Scott Jones. Neither report gives ratings, an episode count, a start date or confirmation of a spring launch beyond Deadline's sentence.
