THE SHORT VERSION

  • AMC Theatres unveiled two Dune: Part Three popcorn buckets: a Sandworm Thumper design with a working Thumper element and a Double Sandworm version for two people.
  • The 2024 Dune: Part Two bucket became a viral hit and a Saturday Night Live sketch; AMC says it planned the follow-ups around fan expectations.
  • Both come with a large popcorn at AMC locations in the United States and Odeon cinemas in Europe; prices will be announced before the Dec. 18 release.

Two designs, one of them built for sharing

AMC Theatres has revealed two popcorn buckets for Dune: Part Three, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The first is a Sandworm Thumper collectible with what Variety, quoting AMC's announcement, calls a working Thumper design, referring to the device the Fremen use to pound the desert sand and attract the giant sandworms. The second is a Double Sandworm collectible with two Shai-Hulud, which AMC says makes it easier to share popcorn.

Both buckets come with a large popcorn and will be sold at AMC locations in the United States and at Odeon Cinemas throughout Europe, per THR. AMC has not announced a price or an on-sale date; THR reports that the price will be announced closer to the film's December 18 release date. The collection also includes an Atreides-Fremen light-up cup, a spacing guild navigator cup, mystery keychains and a sandworm plush.

The first bucket became a meme before it became merchandise

The idea has a history. In 2024, the sandworm-inspired bucket for Dune: Part Two went viral after moviegoers noticed its suggestive shape, and it became the subject of memes before Saturday Night Live built a sketch around it. THR notes that the bucket became an online and retail hit as well as a target for the sketch. The sketch itself: Marcello Hernández plays a high school student who tells his friends he is going to lose his virginity to the Dune popcorn bucket, singing at one point that he is not scared of the teeth in the middle.

The bucket's creator, Marcus Gonzalez of the Zinc Group, told the Wall Street Journal that sexual innuendo was definitely not the intent, and offered the explanation that the worm is the worm. Variety reports that the Part Two canisters cost $24.99 plus tax and sold for much more on secondary markets. That is the commercial fact underneath the joke: a plastic bucket priced like a novelty became a resale item.

Why a cinema chain keeps investing in buckets

Collectible buckets are a revenue line, not a marketing stunt. THR reports that such products can significantly boost theatre revenue and that collectible buckets often sell for $25 to $50. It also notes that Regal sold a bucket for The Fantastic Four: First Steps last year for $80. Those prices sit well above a standard popcorn tub, and the margin comes from the container rather than the popcorn inside it.

The Part Two bucket is credited with setting off a wave of popcorn-bucket merchandising across the industry, which is why the follow-ups are being announced weeks before the film opens. AMC is selling the new designs in two markets, the United States and Europe, and pairing them with a set of smaller items. Neither report breaks out what AMC earns per bucket, and neither says how much of its food and beverage revenue comes from collectibles. The company has not published production numbers or said whether the designs will be sold online as well as at cinemas. A related film-release file on the site covers the theatrical run of Social Reckoning.

AMC frames the new designs as an answer to fan expectations

Hank Green, AMC's senior vice president of food and beverage, gave the company's explanation in a statement quoted by both outlets. He said the Part Two sandworm bucket became a viral phenomenon and that AMC knew Dune fans would have high expectations for what came next, and that from the moment the chain started planning the Part Three collectibles the goal was to exceed those expectations. He described the new items as taking the experience to the next level with designs straight from the movie.

That statement is a merchandising claim, not a review of the products. Neither report includes photographs described in enough detail to judge how close the buckets are to the film's creatures, and neither says whether the working Thumper element does anything beyond moving. The only confirmed product facts are the two designs, the popcorn bundle, the two sales regions and the existence of the wider collection.

The film opens the same day as Avengers: Doomsday

Dune: Part Three opens in theatres on December 18. Variety reports that it is directed by Denis Villeneuve, based on Frank Herbert's novel, and that it concludes the trilogy, with Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides forced to deal with the fallout from his rise to the throne. The cast includes Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Rebecca Ferguson.

The release date puts the film against another major opening: Variety notes that December 18 is also the day Avengers: Doomsday arrives, and asks whether the Marvel film will have a popcorn bucket that breaks the internet. THR separately reports strong advance sales for Dune: Part Three, with London's BFI IMAX ticket sales beating a previous record set by Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The buckets are being announced into a film that already has momentum, which is the practical reason the merchandise can be promoted this early. The site's festival file lists the BFI London Film Festival 2026 winners.

What AMC has not said yet

The announcement leaves several questions open. There is no price, no on-sale date and no confirmation of whether the buckets will be available online. Neither report says how many units AMC will stock, whether the designs are limited, or whether the Odeon rollout will follow the same timing as the US release.

What is confirmed is narrower: two sandworm designs, a large popcorn included, sales at AMC in the United States and Odeon in Europe, and a wider collection of cups, keychains and a plush. Neither report says whether the Part Two bucket returns alongside the new designs. For a product line that lives on being photographed and shared, the first public images will matter more than the announcement text, and those are expected closer to December. Another release file on the site covers the New York theatrical run of Only Living Pickpocket.
