THE SHORT VERSION

  • BAFTA has named 21 emerging creatives across film, television and games for its 2026 Breakthrough U.K. cohort, a programme now in its 13th year and supported by Netflix.
  • Variety names actors Ella Bruccoleri, Izuka Hoyle and Sophie Stone, the documentary maker Myrid Carten, the writers Yassmin Abdel-Magied and Louis Paxton, and five games creatives including Eloise Singer.
  • The Hollywood Reporter carries an interview with one member of the cohort, the writer-director Imran Perretta, whose debut feature Ish won the audience award at the 2025 Venice Critics' Week, and it does not report the list.

Twenty-one names across three sectors

BAFTA has unveiled its 2026 Breakthrough U.K. cohort, selecting 21 emerging creatives across film, television and games for its annual talent development programme. That is the announcement carried by Variety, which dates the scheme to its 13th year and lists what the cohort receives: year-round career support, mentorship, networking opportunities and full BAFTA membership. The paper names Netflix as the programme's supporter and quotes both organisations behind it.

The Hollywood Reporter carries no announcement of its own. Its piece is an interview with one member of the cohort, the writer-director Imran Perretta, and it mentions his selection only as the occasion for the conversation. Nothing in it confirms the size of the list or the names on it, so the two articles read as an announcement and a profile rather than as two accounts of one event.

The actors, the documentarian and the writers

Variety names the actors first: Ella Bruccoleri, who appears in The Other Bennet Sister, Izuka Hoyle of Prisoner and Sophie Stone of Falling. Alongside them it places the filmmaker Myrid Carten, whose documentary A Want in Her earned acclaim on the festival circuit, the Emmerdale writer Yassmin Abdel-Magied, the Ish director Imran Perretta and Louis Paxton, the writer and director behind The Incomer.

Variety also prints a short credits list at the foot of the piece, and it is the only place some names appear: the casting directors Lucy Allen and Tom Payne for Sunny Dancer, the creator and executive producer Tom Cousins for Rafi the Wishing Wizard, and the performer Tom McKay, listed against Mysteria Ecclesiae: Kingdom Come Deliverance DLC. That list runs to fewer than 21 names and the paper does not label it complete, so neither article prints the full cohort. The paper does not say how the list was ordered or whether the six names on it were the only ones it could confirm.

Five in games, two in unscripted

Variety splits the cohort by sector. In documentary and unscripted television it names Chris Lynch, presenter and producer of In the Driving Seat, and Runako Celina, producer and reporter on Death in Dubai. In games it counts five selections and names three: Eloise Singer, writer and director of The Pirate Queen: No Safe Waters; Husban Siddiqi, game director and developer of Rogue Eclipse; and Kate Killick, creative director of Pieced Together.

The three sectors are the programme's own framing. Variety quotes BAFTA's chief executive describing a scheme that champions practitioners from all three, and the paper keeps its numbers inside individual sentences rather than totalling them. The only figure the announcement commits to is 21. The games strand is the one place where the piece gives a sub-total, five, and then names three of the five. The film and television names are never counted at all, so the sectors are not weighted equally in the piece.

A year of support, not a prize

Variety sets out what selection means. The cohort gets year-round career support, mentorship, networking opportunities and full BAFTA membership, in a scheme the paper dates to its 13th year. BAFTA's chief executive Jane Millichip is quoted calling the programme impactful and saying it is designed to give creatives the support and connections to build lasting careers. The paper names no mentor, describes no session and puts no value on the membership. It does not say whether the mentorship runs one to one or in groups, or what a place offers once the year is over.

Variety also gives the programme a record. It reports that more than 330 creatives have taken part globally since the launch, and that they have collectively earned more than 200 BAFTA nominations and over 80 wins. The alumni it lists include Florence Pugh, Tom Holland, Jessie Buckley, Josh O'Connor, Bella Ramsey, Paapa Essiedu and Letitia Wright. Those figures are the programme's own and the paper attributes none of them to an outside count.

One member, and the film behind him

The Hollywood Reporter's subject is Ish, Perretta's debut feature, which the paper reports has been on the festival circuit and beyond for more than a year. The film won the audience award at the 2025 Venice Critics' Week, stars Farhan Hasnat, Yahya Kitana and Sudha Bhuchar, and follows two teenagers, Ish and Maram, through a police stop-and-search and its aftermath. It was shot in Luton, near London.

Perretta tells the paper he came from the art world, where the life cycle of a film was new to him, and that the cinema release he expected to close the experience instead opened a second one. He says the film reached audiences beyond the activist screenings he had anticipated, and ties its reception to what he describes as an authoritarian turn across a number of Western countries. The Hollywood Reporter dates his selection to Wednesday and names the programme. It does not list the cohort, describe what the programme provides or name anyone else on it; it treats the selection as a marker attached to a film that was already travelling.

Netflix's seventh year and a U.S. list

Variety reports that Netflix is the programme's official supporter for a seventh consecutive year, and that the partnership sits inside the streamer's Generation N initiative for emerging and mid-career U.K. talent. Netflix's vice president of U.K. content, Anne Mensah, is quoted welcoming the group. The paper does not say what the support is worth, how many places it funds, or whether any of it is cash.

Variety adds that BAFTA North America will announce its U.S. Breakthrough cohort later in November, which will be a separate list of separate names. For the U.K. group the published record is a count, a sector split, part of a credits list and two statements of support.
