THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Santa Barbara International Film Festival named eight Virtuoso Award recipients on Oct. 30: Carrie Coon, Mariana di Girolamo, Rosalind Eleazar, Jordan Firstman, Anthony Ippolito, Jaafar Jackson, Inde Navarrette and Kate O’Flynn.
  • The ceremony is set for Feb. 7, 2027, at the Arlington Theatre, with Dave Karger moderating for the 17th year, during the festival’s 42nd edition, which runs Feb. 3-13.
  • Deadline reported that John Malkovich will receive the festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, the only other 2027 honor either outlet names.

Eight performers were named on Friday

Deadline reported on Oct. 30 that the Santa Barbara International Film Festival had named the recipients of its 2027 Virtuoso Awards: Carrie Coon, Mariana di Girolamo, Rosalind Eleazar, Jordan Firstman, Anthony Ippolito, Jaafar Jackson, Inde Navarrette and Kate O’Flynn. The outlet paired each performer with a film: The Liberation for Coon, Wild Horse Nine for di Girolamo, Misty Green for Eleazar, Club Kid for Firstman, I Play Rocky for Ippolito, Michael for Jackson, Obsession for Navarrette and Tender Loving Care for O’Flynn. The festival named them on Friday, Deadline said.

The Hollywood Reporter carried the same eight names and reported that the ceremony will be held at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2027. The paper said the eight will discuss their work, individually and then as a group, ahead of the presentation. Both outlets reported that the 42nd edition of the festival runs Feb. 3-13, 2027.

Which performers the paper placed in which race

The Hollywood Reporter described the group as eight performers with wildly different backgrounds who each had a breakthrough in 2026 and now find themselves in Oscar contention. It placed Coon, Eleazar and Navarrette among best actress contenders, for The Liberation, Misty Green and Obsession respectively. That category framing is the paper’s reading of the season rather than a festival statement. The paper did not say whether that reading rests on critic predictions, studio campaigns or the results of earlier awards.

It put Firstman, Ippolito and Jackson in the best actor conversation, for Club Kid, I Play Rocky and Michael, and called di Girolamo and O’Flynn best supporting actress frontrunners for Wild Horse Nine and Tender Loving Care. Deadline’s report does not use that framing. It lists the eight alongside their films and leaves the categories out, and it does not describe any of them as a frontrunner.

What the festival says the award recognises

Deadline quoted the festival’s description of the prize: the Virtuoso Award recognises “a select group of talent whose exceptional work in films has placed them at the center of the conversation around the year’s most noteworthy cinematic performances.” Deadline introduced the sentence with the phrase “Per SBIFF,” attributing it to the festival rather than to its own reporting. Neither report quotes a separate citation for any of the eight, and neither says how the recipients were chosen. The description itself gives no selection criteria and no time frame.

Dave Karger, a host at Turner Classic Movies and the author of 50 Movie Nights: Contemporary Stars on Their Favorite Classic Films, will moderate the evening for the 17th year in a row, The Hollywood Reporter reported. “This year’s Virtuosos are a powerhouse group from the most talked-about films of the season,” Karger said in a statement. “I think it’s especially fitting that so many of them are international performers and I can’t wait to help welcome them all to Santa Barbara.” The same quote appears in Deadline’s report, attributed to Karger in both.

The festival’s other 2027 award so far

Deadline reported earlier that John Malkovich, a two-time Oscar nominee, will receive the festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award. Deadline said that announcement led off the festival’s 2027 honors. The outlet said he won the best actor prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival for Wild Horse Nine, a Martin McDonagh film in which he and Sam Rockwell play a pair of CIA agents who travel from Santiago to Easter Island on the eve of the 1973 Chilean coup. The film, a Searchlight Pictures release, opens in theaters on Nov. 6. Deadline said the release came from the festival.

“A legendary actor gives this year in Wild Horse Nine his best performance to date in which he combines pathos, volatility, vulnerability and tenderness,” the festival’s executive director, Roger Durling, said in the release announcing that award, according to Deadline. Durling’s statement was released on Thursday, the day before the Virtuosos were named. Deadline also reported that Michael B. Jordan won the same award last year before taking the best actor Oscar for Sinners, and described the festival as a valued stop on the movie-awards circuit.

Who has received the award before

The Hollywood Reporter listed past Virtuosos as Teyana Taylor, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Renate Reinsve, Wagner Moura, Wunmi Mosaku, Inga Ibsdotter-Lilleaas, Kieran Culkin, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Mikey Madison, Lily Gladstone, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Andrew Scott, Austin Butler, Danielle Deadwyler, Ke Huy Quan, Jeremy Strong, Ariana DeBose, Alana Haim, Troy Kotsur, Riz Ahmed and Zendaya. The paper gave the list without dates or years attached to any name, and it did not say how far back the list goes.

Deadline listed past winners of the Outstanding Performer prize, among them Ralph Fiennes, Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Sacha Baron Cohen, Adam Driver, Rami Malek, Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan, Steve Carell, Jennifer Lawrence, Viola Davis, Colin Firth, Penélope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet and Charlize Theron. The two lists cover two different awards and do not overlap: one is the Virtuoso Award, the other Outstanding Performer of the Year.

What the two reports leave open

Neither outlet names the rest of the festival’s 2027 slate beyond Malkovich and the eight Virtuosos. Neither says which of the eight has been nominated for an Academy Award; The Hollywood Reporter’s phrase is “in Oscar contention,” and neither report mentions a nomination. Deadline’s story points to “the fest’s other 2027 awards winners revealed so far,” but the only other honoree it details is Malkovich. Neither report gives the name of any selection committee.

What is confirmed is the list of eight, the films they are being honored for, the Feb. 7 ceremony at the Arlington Theatre and the festival’s Feb. 3-13 run. Neither report says whether the evening will be streamed or how tickets will be sold.
