Big Little Lies Shot One Day of Season 3 to Hold Its California Tax Credit

Big Little Lies filmed for one day at Warner Bros. Studios Burbank this week to keep an approved California tax credit, Variety reported and Deadline confirmed. Full production is due next year.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Big Little Lies shot one day of production at Warner Bros. Studios Burbank's The Ranch Lot on Thursday, Variety reported exclusively and Deadline confirmed the same day.
  • Both outlets report the day was needed to keep an already approved California tax credit, and that full production is expected next year without a locked date.
  • Deadline reports that Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley were not involved; HBO has not announced the return of production and declined to comment.

One day of filming at The Ranch Lot

Big Little Lies shot one day of production this week at Warner Bros. Studios Burbank's The Ranch Lot, Variety reported on 30 October in an exclusive, and Deadline confirmed the same day. Variety says the filming took place on Thursday. Merrin Dungey, who has played Detective Adrienne Quinlan since the show began, was in front of the camera. Variety describes her as a recurring star who appeared in both of the show's first two seasons, and notes that Quinlan investigates the murder at the centre of the series and remains suspicious of the group it calls the Monterey 5.

Both outlets describe the day as an exception rather than the start of the season. Deadline reports that HBO has been working to align the schedules of the main cast and that the one-day shoot came before full production. Variety reports that full production is not expected until next year and that a date has not been locked, which leaves this single day as the only filming either outlet can put a date on.

The tax credit is the reason both reports give

Variety attributes the motive to insiders: the one day of principal photography took place so the show could maintain its California state tax credit, which has already been approved. Deadline's account matches, saying the shoot was done to keep the credit, and that the move came after the credit had been approved even though it is not clear when that approval became official. Neither outlet names the people who described the arrangement, and HBO, which declined to comment, has not confirmed it. Neither outlet reports what the day cost or how many crew were called in.

Both reports set out the same rule. Principal photography must begin within 180 calendar days of the Conditional Allocation Letter, or 240 days for a project with a qualified expenditure budget of $100 million or more. Variety reports that it is unclear when Season 3 received its letter, so neither report can date the deadline that the one-day shoot was protecting.

The five leads were not on set

Deadline reports that Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Zoë Kravitz and Shailene Woodley were not involved in the day's work. Variety does not list anyone else who was present beyond Dungey. A director for Season 3 has not been confirmed; Variety reports that the director on set this week was someone already involved with the show and approved by the Directors Guild of America.

HBO declined to comment, according to both reports. Variety reports that the return of production has not been officially announced, and Deadline says Variety broke the news and that its own confirmation followed. That leaves the tax-credit explanation resting on unnamed insiders at both outlets, with no studio statement to attach it to and no explanation of why the day had to happen this week rather than later.

Schedules, and what the HBO chief said in September

Deadline reports that the show is closing in on aligning the schedules ahead of a full production start next year. In September, HBO chief Casey Bloys told Deadline: “There are a lot of schedules to line up there, so I think they’re all doing their best. The good news is we’ve got a lot of very popular movie stars. The bad news is they’ve got very busy schedules, so we’re doing our best to line them up.”

Variety's reporting on timing is narrower: no date is locked and a director is not confirmed. Deadline adds that a return of production has not been officially announced, and frames the schedule as something the show is closing in on rather than past. Neither report gives a start month for the full season, and neither says how many episodes Season 3 will run. Deadline's September conversation is also the only place either report quotes an executive about the schedules.

Kelley, Sloane and a novel set ten years on

Variety reports that Francesca Sloane joined in September 2025 to write the first episode and executive produce the season with David E. Kelley, Kidman and Witherspoon. Deadline reports the same credit and adds that Kelley created the show, which is based on Liane Moriarty's novel and also stars Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott and Meryl Streep. Both outlets describe Sloane as a writer and executive producer, and neither calls her the showrunner.

Both outlets tie the season to Moriarty's new book. Variety reports that Big Little Truths was released in August, moves the story forward a decade and is expected to be the backbone of the Season 3 storyline. Deadline dates the book to earlier this year, calls it thought to be the basis for the season, and describes it as set ten years after the first two seasons, with the characters' children now in high school and dealing with teenagers, drugs, sex and alcohol.

Years between seasons, and what is unresolved

Season 1 aired in 2017 and Season 2 in 2019, and both reports note the gap. Variety reports that the first two seasons were filmed in California even without earlier tax incentives for the show, and that Kelley has been a strong proponent of keeping production in the state. Deadline places the one-day shoot after the approval and records that Season 3 was confirmed last year.

What is unresolved after 30 October is the date Season 3 starts, the director, the episode count and whether the five leads are all returning. Neither outlet reports a cast contract or a start month, and HBO has not commented.
