THE SHORT VERSION

  • Cynthia Erivo has joined the cast of Universal's Snoop Dogg biopic and is set to play Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, with Variety and Rolling Stone both crediting The Hollywood Reporter for the story.
  • Variety carries the Panther years of Shakur's life and a role against every cast name, while Rolling Stone carries her later decades and one name Variety omits, SwayvoTwain as Notorious B.I.G.
  • Variety dates the film to Aug. 6 without a year and Rolling Stone expects August 2027, leaving the two reports with a month, a day and a year that no single sentence contains together.

Erivo Boards as Afeni Shakur

Cynthia Erivo has joined the cast of Universal's Snoop Dogg biopic and is set to play Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, Variety reports. Variety opens by calling her a Tony, Grammy and Emmy winner, names the role in that same sentence and treats the casting as settled. There is no deal figure, no contract length and no statement from Universal in the item, and Erivo's representatives are listed at the end without comment on the part.

Rolling Stone has the same role in different wording, saying Erivo has been tapped to portray Afeni Shakur, the mother of Tupac Shakur, in the Universal Pictures biopic about Snoop Dogg. It credits The Hollywood Reporter for the story. Variety closes its own item by noting the news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Neither outlet claims the casting as its own, and neither adds a second source for it.

The Record on Afeni Shakur

Variety carries the Panther years. Its paragraph says Afeni Shakur was a prominent member of the Black Panther Party, that she was born in North Carolina as Alice Faye Williams in 1947 and moved to the Bronx with her mother at 11, and that she joined the Panthers after hearing Bobby Seale speak in 1968 before marrying a fellow Panther, Lumumba Shakur, soon after. That paragraph stops in the 1960s and does not mention her son's career or her death.

Rolling Stone begins where Variety stops. It calls her a former Black Panther and political activist, records that she was the subject of several of her son's songs including the 1995 single Dear Mama, and says that a year after the song was released Tupac was gunned down in Las Vegas and died a week later. She then launched the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation one year after his death, oversaw his estate, and died in 2016 at 69.

The Ensemble, Name by Name

Variety prints the cast with a part attached to every name. Jonathan Daviss leads the film, which Variety says is described as the definitive biopic of the entertainment mogul and icon. Around him it lists Myles Bullock Be as Dr. Dre, Lauren London as Snoop's late mother Beverly Tate, Camron Jones as Tupac Shakur, Algee Smith as Warren G, Tre Hale as Suge Knight, Laya DeLeon Hayes as Snoop's wife Shante Broadus, Olly Sholotan as Kurupt, Corey Champagne as Nate Dogg and Jonica Booth as The Lady of Rage.

Rolling Stone runs the same names with no parts attached, then adds one that Variety never prints: SwayvoTwain, described as the musician born Michael D'Angelo Archer II to D'Angelo and Angie Stone, will portray Notorious B.I.G. It also hangs earlier credits on two actors, tagging Daviss to Outer Banks and Jones to Panic, and shortens the wife's name to Shante. The two lists overlap but they are not the same list, and only one of them contains the Notorious B.I.G. role.

Brewer, the Script and the Producers

Craig Brewer directs. Variety names him with Hustle and Flow and Song Sung Blue, says Universal dated the film for theatrical release on Aug. 6, and reports that the screenplay is Brewer's rewrite of Joe Robert Cole's original script, crediting Cole with Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. Rolling Stone names Brewer as director and stops there on the writing, so the rewrite and the Cole credit appear in one report only.

On producers the two accounts line up in outline. Variety says Snoop Dogg is producing, that the film will incorporate music from his catalog, and that Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, Allan Mandelbaum and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker produce alongside him. It adds that the film is the first project under Death Row Pictures' overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios, with Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret overseeing. Rolling Stone lists the same producers, gives Grazer 8 Mile, and puts the film in production in California.

Aug. 6 Against August 2027

The release date splits the two. Variety says Universal dated the film for theatrical release on Aug. 6 and supplies no year. Rolling Stone says the film is expected to arrive in theaters in August 2027. Only Variety gives a day, only Rolling Stone gives the year beside the month, and only Rolling Stone hedges, using expected where Variety uses dated. Anyone holding both items has a month, a day and a year, and no single sentence that contains all three.

Neither piece carries a budget, a runtime, a shooting schedule or a first image. Neither quotes Universal, Snoop Dogg or Erivo, and neither says how large the part is. The role is named and the film is dated; the size of the part, the terms of the deal and the state of the production are absent from both. That is a narrow record, and it is the whole of what the two outlets print about the film itself.

What Erivo Has Queued Up

Variety closes on Erivo's schedule. It says she recently hosted Saturday Night Live: U.K., that she starred in Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and that she earned Golden Globe, SAG, Critics' Choice, NAACP, BAFTA and Academy Award nominations for her portrayal of Elphaba. It adds that she executive produced and stars in the film adaptation of Prima Facie, which premiered at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

Rolling Stone adds the dates Variety leaves out, putting Prima Facie in theaters in the U.K. and Ireland on Nov. 13 and dating a Takashi Doscher film she also stars in to Feb. 5. Variety, which does not mention that film, names Children of Blood and Bone instead, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and opening Jan. 15 with Viola Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Regina King and Lashana Lynch.
