THE SHORT VERSION

  • Variety reported on Nov. 2 that Justin Timberlake has a four-part docuseries at Apple TV expected in December, with Janet Jackson as a guest.
  • One of Variety's three unnamed sources says Jackson discusses the 2004 Super Bowl performance; neither outlet has an on-the-record confirmation from Timberlake, Jackson or Apple.
  • Both pages place the project after his 2021 apology to Jackson, his 2024 impaired-driving case and his 2025 disclosure that he has Lyme disease.

A December window and three unnamed sources

Apple TV has a four-part docuseries from Justin Timberlake in the works, and Variety reported on Monday, Nov. 2, that it is expected to arrive on the service in December. Variety describes the project as a “tell-all” and attributes that description and the December timing to three sources it does not name. Billboard carried the same account the same day and credited Variety for it.

No one involved has confirmed any of it on the record. Variety says representatives for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple had no comment or did not respond to its multiple requests, and Billboard says it reached out to Timberlake's representatives for comment. Beyond the episode count, the month and one guest, neither page reports a title, a synopsis or a premiere date.

Jackson is the guest, and the Super Bowl follows

Janet Jackson is the guest both pages name. Variety's account is the more specific: one source says she discusses the 2004 Super Bowl performance. Billboard describes that performance as the one where Timberlake exposed her breast on live television and the term “wardrobe malfunction” entered the language, and says the documentary will almost certainly return to the incident now that she is involved.

Variety's second source adds that Timberlake discusses recent comments from Britney Spears, his former girlfriend. Neither page says how Jackson appears: whether she sat for an interview, how long her segment runs or what she is asked. Billboard's only other reference to Spears is the 2021 apology, in which Timberlake addressed the way he had spoken about her after their 2002 breakup.

Fisher Stevens directs, and little else is fixed

Fisher Stevens directs, according to Variety, which is the only production credit either page carries. Variety says further details were not available when it published. The outlet also dates Timberlake's relationship with Apple to 2021, when he starred in the Apple Original film “Palmer,” which is the closest either page comes to explaining why the project landed there. The directing credit is thinner than it looks: Variety does not say whether Stevens was hired by Apple, by Timberlake or by another producer, and neither page names a production company.

Everything else about the series is unconfirmed. There are no episode titles, no announced launch date inside December, no indication of whether filming is finished and no word on whether the four parts arrive at once or weekly. The December window is a report about a plan, not an Apple announcement, and neither page says when the company will make one. Nor does either page say how the four parts are organised, whether by year, by subject or by interview.

The apology both reports treat as context

Both pages place the project after Timberlake's public apology to Jackson. In it, he wrote: “I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right.” The apology was published in 2021, three years before the impaired-driving case and four before the Lyme disclosure. He went on: “I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism.”

Billboard calls the period a reflective chapter and notes that the same 2021 statement covered his earlier remarks about Spears. Variety does not quote the apology, and neither page reports whether the documentary shows it, reads it aloud or asks Jackson to respond to it. That is the largest hole in both accounts, because the apology is the only statement from Timberlake that either outlet quotes at length. Neither page says whether Jackson was interviewed before or after the apology.

A conviction, a meme and a diagnosis

The years since have been uneven. Billboard records a 2024 arrest in the Hamptons on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, a guilty plea to a lesser impaired-driving charge and a sentence of 25 hours of community service. Variety gives the location as Sag Harbor, New York, and says he was stopped in June 2024 after running a stop sign and veering out of his lane, shortly before the tour began.

Variety also revisits a line that travelled further than the case did: Page Six reported that Timberlake told officers “This is going to ruin the tour,” which became a meme, though bodycam footage released later showed he said something closer to “I'm on tour.” Neither page reports a fine or a licence suspension. Billboard quotes him at a concert soon afterwards saying he knew he was hard to love and thanking fans for loving him back. The correction is the only place either page overturns a detail that had already travelled, and Variety records it without saying what else the recording shows.

No album since 2024 and no answer from Apple

Health is the other strand. Timberlake said in July 2025 that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, which affected some performances on the Forget Tomorrow tour. Variety says fans had noticed that he seemed sluggish and low on energy during the international leg of the trek, which he linked to nerve damage and fatigue. “Living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” he wrote. Variety says the tour wrapped that July.

On music, Billboard notes that he has not released an album since 2024, when Everything I Thought It Was reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and that he appeared on “House Music” with Quavo in early October. Variety mentions a guest spot at Jay-Z's concert in Paris last month. Neither page says whether the docuseries carries new music, and neither reports a release date for an album. The music gap is the same one both pages leave: no single, no album date and no word on whether the series is tied to a record.
