Trump Says He Will Think About Nicki Minaj as Press Secretary

Asked directly on a podcast whether the rapper could take the briefing room job, the president called it a good idea and said he would think about it.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Asked on The Benny Show whether Nicki Minaj could be his White House press secretary, Trump called it a good idea and said he would think about it, Billboard reports.
  • Billboard ties the speculation to press secretary Katie Zacharia's departure after five days and to a mock interview with Minaj that communications director Steven Cheung shared on X.
  • Rolling Stone's timeline, published the same day, traces the relationship from Minaj's 2015 remarks and her 2020 refusal to her 2025 feud with Gavin Newsom and her 2026 appearances with Trump; it does not mention the podcast.

The question came on a podcast

Donald Trump was asked on the political commentary podcast The Benny Show whether Nicki Minaj could become his White House press secretary, according to Billboard. The question was put to him directly, and his answer was three short sentences. “That’s a good idea. I think I’ll have to think about that. I’m gonna think about that,” he said, before suggesting that the host, Benny Johnson, would also be “pretty good” for the job. Billboard does not date the interview beyond calling it recent.

Neither report describes an offer, a timetable or a job description. Billboard frames the answer as a reaction to a question, and nothing in the story suggests a decision was made. Rolling Stone, which published a timeline of the relationship the same day, does not mention the podcast exchange at all. Its account of the two of them ends at an October rally and a flight.

A five-day press secretary and a mock interview

Billboard traces the speculation to the departure of press secretary Katie Zacharia, who left the job five days after starting in mid-October. The report says White House communications director Steven Cheung kept the idea alive by sharing footage of a mock interview with Minaj aboard Air Force One. “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary,” Cheung wrote in the caption, tagging the rapper.

Rolling Stone has the same episode in its timeline, with a shorter version of the caption: it quotes Cheung saying he thought they may have found the new press secretary. The difference is only in wording, and both outlets place the post on X. Neither says whether the White House treated it as a joke, and neither reports any comment from Minaj about the job.

Port Huron, Air Force One and a hashtag

Billboard ties the talk to Minaj's increasing involvement in Trump's political activity, including a rally in Michigan ahead of this year's midterms. At the 25 October rally in Port Huron she endorsed the Republican candidates Mike Rogers and John James, and Trump called her to the front of the crowd. Billboard says he drew attention to her looks; Rolling Stone prints the sentence in full: “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful ass before: Nicki Minaj! That’s hard to miss.” 集会与飞行的细节来自 Billboard。

Minaj flew to Michigan on Air Force One with Trump and members of his administration, Billboard reports, and posted a clip of herself walking through the cabin with the caption “#AirForceOneBARBIE”. The same report notes a photograph of the two of them on stage at the Treasury Department's Trump Accounts Summit on 28 January 2026. Rolling Stone's timeline places that meeting at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium and calls it her first formal meeting with the president.

From 2015 to a refusal in 2020

Rolling Stone's timeline starts in November 2015, when Minaj said there were points Trump made that “may not have been so horrible if his approach wasn’t so childish”, and called him hilarious. By February 2020 she had drawn a line: “I’m not gonna jump on the Donald Trump bandwagon,” she said, citing the separation of children from their parents at the border as what bothered her. The timeline places the remark in an interview with Irving Azoff.

The middle of the timeline is territory only Rolling Stone covers. Rolling Stone records that Minaj's husband, Kenneth Petty, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to failing to register as a sex offender, and that fans have speculated a presidential pardon explains her warming to Trump, a link the magazine says has not been confirmed. Billboard does not mention Petty, and neither outlet reports a pardon being granted.

The feud, the conference and the White House visit

Rolling Stone dates the turn to late 2025, when Minaj fought with California governor Gavin Newsom on X and then appeared at Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in Phoenix with Erika Kirk. At that event she used a nickname for Newsom and said, “We don’t have a problem cleaning up the scum if we have to.” By January 2026 she was calling herself Trump's number one fan and had traveled to Washington for the Trump Accounts Summit, where the two met in person for the first time.

Billboard's account is narrower and does not go back past this autumn. It reports the rally, the flight and the podcast answer, and leaves the earlier years to Rolling Stone. Read together, the two pieces describe a relationship that moved from a 2020 refusal to a 2026 question about a senior White House job, without either outlet reporting a conversation in which the job was offered.

What neither report says

Neither report contains a statement from Minaj about the press secretary idea, and neither quotes the White House press office on it. Billboard does not say when the podcast episode was recorded, and Rolling Stone does not mention the podcast. The departure of Katie Zacharia appears in Billboard alone, with no reason given for the five-day tenure, no account of why she left so quickly and no successor has been named.

The confirmed facts are small: a question on a podcast, an answer that put the decision off, a communications director's post on X, a rally and a flight. Whether any of it becomes a job is not in either text.
