Jalen Thomas Brooks told Collider at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival that he will be back as ER nurse Mateo Diaz in The Pitt season 3, though he does not know what the season asks of him.

THE SHORT VERSION

  • Jalen Thomas Brooks confirmed in an interview with Collider at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival that he will be back as the ER nurse Mateo Diaz in The Pitt season 3.
  • He said he does not know what the season will do with the part, and ScreenRant notes that filming began in June, which points to a later appearance.
  • Both reports record cast changes around him: Supriya Ganesh has left as Dr. Samira Mohan, Ayesha Harris has been made a series regular, and Shabana Azeez moves into a smaller role.

Brooks confirmed the return himself

Jalen Thomas Brooks will be back in The Pitt season 3 as the ER nurse Mateo Diaz. He confirmed it in an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, and Collider published the exchange on 30 October. Asked directly whether he would return, Brooks said: "I will be there. I will be in Season 3." ScreenRant reported the same interview that afternoon and credited Collider for it.

Brooks was careful about the scope. He said he knows little about what the season does with Mateo, "just like how everybody on that show never really knows". What he does know, he said, is that the people behind The Pitt care about what they are doing: "They’re so seasoned, and they have stories to tell — important ones, too." Neither outlet reports how many episodes Mateo appears in.

What the season does with him is unannounced

ScreenRant draws one conclusion from the schedule. Filming on the third season began in June, the site reports, so a return that has not been shot yet would most likely arrive later in the season. It adds that season 2 took seven months to film, which leaves room for a recurring part to be built out. Collider does not discuss the filming schedule.

Neither report gives an episode count for Mateo, a first appearance date, or any promotion to series regular. ScreenRant describes him as a recurring player who has been a fan favourite since season 1, and it notes that a different cast member, Ayesha Harris, has been made a series regular. ScreenRant's piece is built on Collider's interview rather than a second conversation with the actor. Neither report carries a statement from HBO Max on the casting.

The changes around him are already confirmed

ScreenRant reports that season 3 was greenlit before season 2 premiered, and that the cast has changed since. Supriya Ganesh has left the role of Dr. Samira Mohan. Ayesha Harris, who played Dr. Parker Ellis in a recurring capacity across the first two seasons, has been promoted to series regular. ScreenRant frames those moves as the major cast changes surrounding Brooks's confirmation.

Collider adds a third change. Shabana Azeez, who plays Victoria Javadi, moves into a smaller role in season 3. ScreenRant puts the shift in character terms: Javadi leaves the emergency department for an emergency psychiatric rotation, so she and Mateo will no longer share a floor. The first teaser for the season shows her making several trips downstairs, ScreenRant reports. Related coverage on this site includes Matthew Weiner's exit from The Chairman.

The Mateo and Javadi thread

ScreenRant spends a paragraph on the pairing. It says Mateo's quick wit with the staff and the patients made him a favourite, and that the chemistry with Javadi stirred hope of a romance. It also recalls that Brooks described at least "a mutual interest" between the two characters during season 2, and suggested they had probably had coffee between seasons.

The longer answer comes from ScreenRant's earlier conversation with him. Brooks said there is "a little bit of attention on both ends", that Mateo is not going to brush Javadi off, and that the relationship "might not be platonic". ScreenRant notes that her rotation does not rule out scenes together, because the teaser shows her coming back down to the department. It adds that the new rotation is likely to bring its own strain, and that she may look for someone she trusts to confide in.

January 2027, and a fast turnaround

ScreenRant reports that The Pitt season 3 premieres on HBO Max in January 2027. Collider puts that in context: season 1 arrived in January 2024, season 2 exactly a year later, and HBO has said the third will land around the same point next year. Collider calls the turnaround nearly unheard of in the streaming era, where shows often take years between seasons. It also notes that HBO had stayed away from the medical drama before this series, and that The Pitt has become one of the most-watched shows on television since 2024. Wyle spent years playing Dr. John Carter on ER, and Collider says many of that show's viewers tuned in to see him lead a medical drama nearly 20 years after ER ended.

Brooks described the production rhythm to Collider. New episodes are still being filmed when they come out, he said, which feels like an old-school way of working instead of the streaming norm. Collider compares it to network procedurals such as NCIS and Blue Bloods, which release a season while shooting the next. The site's notes on the series say each episode covers roughly one hour of a single emergency-department shift, in order.

What is confirmed, and what is not

The confirmed record after 30 October is narrow. Brooks returns as Mateo, Ganesh has left, Harris has been promoted and Azeez has a smaller part. The season is due in January 2027. Collider's notes add that Noah Wyle won the lead drama actor Emmy for the show in 2025 and again in 2026, and that the series reunites him with the ER team of John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill.

What neither report gives is the size of Mateo's part, the episode he first appears in, or a synopsis for the season. Neither carries a statement from HBO Max beyond the premiere window. Brooks's own account is the only description of his plans. A teaser is in circulation, and ScreenRant's account of it is the only footage either outlet describes.
